(Potassium Citrate)
Potacit Oral Solution is prescribed for:
Potacit is a concentrated alkalinizing agent designed to maintain alkaline urine in conditions such as uric acid and cystine stones, particularly where sodium salts are undesirable. It supports uricosuric therapy in gout by reducing urate crystallization in acidic urine and helps correct acidosis in some renal tubular disorders.
Maintains alkaline urinary pH throughout the day when taken after meals and at bedtime.
Does not cause systemic alkalosis at recommended doses.
Highly palatable, well-tolerated, and suitable for long-term use.
Does not neutralize gastric acid or disturb digestion.
Potassium citrate is absorbed and metabolized into potassium bicarbonate, acting as a systemic alkalizer.
Before absorption → effect similar to chlorides.
After metabolism → effect similar to bicarbonates.
Less than 5% is excreted unchanged in urine.
Generally well tolerated. Possible risks:
Hyperkalemia or alkalosis in patients with impaired renal function.
Potassium intoxication: weakness, listlessness, confusion, tingling of extremities, and other symptoms of elevated serum potassium.
Severe renal impairment with oliguria/azotemia
Untreated Addison’s disease
Acute dehydration
Severe myocardial damage
